The Rothschild Canticles (Flanders or the Rhineland), from the turn of the 14th century is a highly illustrated florilegium (anthology) of meditations and prayers. Marginalia can add to or illustrate the text they accompany, or be entirely unrelated; frequently including references to bodily functions, nudity, and bizarre or bawdy activities. The butt trumpet is a recurring theme, though not always played by humans.
